Maryland will be able to begin debate as soon as Tuesday on the status of same sex marriage. It promises to be a long and heated discussion.
The current law defines marriage as between a man and a woman. If the bill passes,Governor Martin O'Malley has indicated he will sign it. If that occurs, licenses can then be issued for same sex partners to marry. After the bill is signed into law, opponents can then gather the 55,000 signatures it will take to get the law to voter referendum in 2012.
