Painting the roof white can reduce the temperatures significantly and are part of the greening programs of some major cities. In the story a roof painter aims the thermometer at a part of the roof not painted white and gets a reading of 143 degrees and rising. He then points the thermometer at the portion of the roof painted white and it reads 98 degrees and decreasing and this is just the first coat. The cooler temperatures also mean inside temperatures are cooler as well. Energy Secretary, Steven Chu, said painting the roofs white, "cool roofs", could contribute to fighting global warming nationwide. "Cool roofs are one of the quickest and lowest-cost ways we can reduce our global carbon emissions and begin the hard work of slowing climate change," said Chu in July, while announcing that Department of Energy buildings would be painted white wherever possible.
